Orthogonal spin labelling
The use of two and more types of spin labels with different spectroscopic properties opens up a playground for new experimental strategies in the EPR studies of biomacromolecules and their complexes. This allows increasing the information content of experimental data that can be obtained from one spin labelled sample and better monitoring of imperfections, such as aggregation of macromolecules.
Furthermore, individual site-to-site distances can be correlated directly in the same sample by having selective spectroscopic access to each labelled site. We work on testing different paramagnetic metal centres as well as stable organic radicals as potential spin labels.
