Facilities

Sample preparation lab
Basic chemistry lab and basic biochemical work bench.
- Vacuum line operating at 10-6mbar
- Programmable oven up to 1100°C
- Liquid nitrogen sample storage dewars
- Sample refrigerators for storage at 4°C, -18°C, and -78°C

X-band cw spectrometer
Almost every sample sees this machine first. Students are trained on it as well. Operating almost 24/7.
- Bruker ElexSys E500 @9.6 GHz
- Temperature range 3K-500K
- cw-EPR and cw-ENDOR

Ultra-wideband pulsed X/Q-band EPR spectrometer
At 12 GS/s with 5 GHz analog bandwidth and with an in-built sequencer, the arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) source enables new types of experiments..
- Agilent M8190 12 GS/s AWG & SP Devices 2 GS/s digitizer
- Magnetic field up to 1.5 T & Temperature range 4 K-300 K
- 1 kW power at X band, 200 W at Q band

S-band pulse/cw spectrometer
A versatile, octave frequency, high power, cw/pulse spectrometer, often the key to the solution.
home-built @2-4GHz
4 microwave channels, 1 kW power
probe pulse arm, magnetic field step units
home-built resonators
temperature range 4 K-300 K

X-band pulse/cw spectrometer
Commercial, sensitive and comfortable (except the software), one of our workhorses.
Bruker ElexSys E580 @9.6GHz
pulse/cw EPR, pulse ENDOR
1kW microwave, 2.5kW rf power
temperature range 2K-300K

Home-built Q-band spectrometer
Reliable highly sensitive workhorse for distance distribution measurements between nitroxide or Gd(III) labels.
pulse and cw EPR, pulse ENDOR and ELDOR @34.5-35.5 GHz
200 W microwave power
temperature range 4.5K-300K
Bruker ElexSys acquisition system (E580)
home-built TE001 cw/pulse probe (OD 3mm sample tubes)

X/Q-band pulse/cw spectrometer (Bruker)
After an upgrade to high pulse power and with using a home-built resonator for oversized samples, this is one of the most sensitive DEER spectrometers worldwide and also a good compromise between concentration sensitivity and resolution for ENDOR.
Bruker ElexSysII E600 @9.7GHz, 34 GHz
magnet field up to 1.5 T
ENDOR and ELDOR capability, temperature range 4.5 K-300 K
150 W mw power, home-built TE001 pulse probe (OD 3mm sample tubes)

X/W-band pulse/cw spectrometer (Bruker)
When g resolution matters or only very small amounts of sample or many heteronuclei contribute to ENDOR spectra, high-field/high-frequency EPR is the method of choice.
Bruker ElexSys E680 @9.7GHz, 95 GHz
magnet fully sweepable from 0 T to 6 T
ENDOR and ELDOR capability
temperature range 4.5 K-300 K
80 mW mw power at 95 GHz
